Report: Wife, Son of Shavkat Rakhmonov Involved in Car Crash in Kazakhstan

The wife and son of Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight contender Shavkat Rakhmonov are in stable condition after a car crash in Kazakhstan on Sunday, according to a report from kz.kursiv.media.

The accident occurred when the driver of a Toyota 200 Land Cruiser lost control of the vehicle and it overturned, leaving two people dead and two others injured. According to the report, Rakhmonov’s wife and son were hospitalized following the crash with “closed craniocerebral injuries and cerebral contusions.” They have since checked out of the hospital after being treated for their injuries, per the regional Department of Health.

Rakhmonov Has Not Commented on Accident

No further information was given regarding the deaths that occurred as a result of the accident. Rakhmonov has not commented on the situation.

Rakhmonov has emerged as one of the top contenders in the UFC’s welterweight division after winning his first seven Octagon appearances. Most recently, he took a unanimous decision over Ian Garry at UFC 310 last December. He was supposed to challenge Belal Muhammad for the welterweight crown at UFC 315 in May but was unable to compete due to injury. Jack Della Maddalena took his place and upset Muhammad to claim the 170-pound belt. Della Maddalena is expected to make his first title defense against ex-lightweight king Islam Makhachev.
